We are a couple of guys in our best 40`s getting out in the dark as often as we can when the clouds are gone in and around the new moon. We come from the Canon DSLR (APS-C) family, but lately we have comformed to the Sony full frame format. For our nightphotos we normally use:

Hardware:
– Sony A7S
– Rokinon 14mm. 2.8
– Also, when shooting timelapse we have the Syrp Genie + Mini + Magic Carpet available for 2 axis movement.

In addition we might bring the following hardware in the equipment bag based on where we’re going and weather conditions:
– Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS
– Canon EF 50mm F1.4 w/Commlite EF-NEX Adapter
– Digital After Drak LensMuff w/a pack of handwarmers (reduce the chance of lens dew / frost in extreme conditions)
– Portable PowerBank (might come in handy we need to charge phones etc)
– Aputure  VS-2 Field Monitor
– Extra stock batteries and external NP-F970 battery w/adapter
– Zoom H4n sound recorder – just in case we want to make a documentary 😉

Software:
– Adobe Lightroom
– Adobe Photoshop
– LRTimelapse (for timelapse sequenses)
– Adobe After Effects (for rendering sequences directly from RAW before the final touch in Premiere Pro)
– Adobe Premiere Pro (for editing timelapse sequences together)

There are also alot of apps for your smartphone to predict the appearance of new moon, constallations, norhern lights, milky way, sunrise etc. Here are som that you might check out:
